Welcome To
LOCHEDGE LODGE
Self-Catering Accommodation
on the Isle of Harris.
Nestled right by the side of Loch Maaruig, at the foot of An Clisham, the highest mountain in the Outer Hebrides and near the well-trodden (and cycled!) Hebridean Way, Lochedge Lodges comprising Lochedge Lodge, the Loom Shed and the Fishermen’s Hut, each offer one or two people an escape from the everyday hassles of modern working life.
The meaning of ‘An Clisham’ is not known, (It could mean ‘rocky cliff’) and the obscure origins of its name are hardly surprising as Clisham is very old indeed; it existed long before India crashed into Asia, causing the corrugations that today we call the Himalayas. But ‘Maaruig’ in that wonderfully practical Gaelic fashion means literally ‘sea bay’ and it could not be better named. Sheltered from the prevailing south-westerly winds Loch Maaruig opens spectacularly as you drive down the single-track road from the main Stornoway-Tarbert Road (the A859) towards your holiday destination at Lochedge Lodge, or across Loch Maaruig at the Loom Shed or Fisherman’s Hut.
It was these attractions, combined with a love for the sea, mountains and walking that drove David and Julia Phillips, the proprietors of Lochedge Lodges to change their way of life and come to Harris from south-east England. Living in the main house, to which the Lodge is attached and directly opposite the Clisham View site (At which the Loom Shed and Fisherman’s Hut are located) they are close at hand to offer any help or advice that you may need.
All the properties at Lochedge Lodges offer great comfort in a wondrous setting with convenient access to the main road to Stornoway (29 miles) and Tarbert (9 miles) or to explore the islands of Lewis and Harris.
The more adventurous visitors will find all their needs well-addressed also, a publicly-available slipway nearby offers the perfect facility for launching boats of all kinds and you may well see David and Julia out on the Loch in their kayaks; paddleboarding is also an option. You must bring your own boat or boats and space is available, albeit not under cover for storing boats for the duration of your stay. For walkers and cyclists, the options are almost limitless, the Hebridean Way is near and David and Julia, who regularly walk the hills will be happy to give some pointers should you wish.
